Does anyone else get giddy when they are reading their Bible and something they never saw before jumps off the page at you? The Word of God is living and active, it is not a dry, dull book, it is full of adventure, intrigue, scandal, hope, life and fresh revelations. I love the Word of God.
Proverbs 3 is a chapter I have read over and over again. I have been a Christian for over 30 years and I have preached on, taught on, memorized verses in Proverbs 3. This is well treaded territory for me, but today, in this very chapter of this living Word of God, something I never saw before jumped out at me.
Proverbs 3:9-10 says, “Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase; So your barns will be filled with plenty, And your vats will overflow with new wine.”
Barns filled with plenty is plenty of bread, for their barns would have been filled with wheat, grain, barley, seed for making bread. And your vats will overflow with new wine. Bread and wine. When we honor the Lord with our possessions, our wealth, we never cease to commune with the Lord in the bread and the wine.
Giving of our tithes and offerings is another nod to communion, it is another way to celebrate Passover, the barley harvest and Pentecost the grape harvest. In one little verse that has been used as offering messages, there is so much more that is happening when we give our money as an act of honor.
We are celebrating communion, we are remembering what Jesus did at Passover and the Holy Spirit that was poured out on Pentecost. Bread and wine will never run out, but rather we will have an overflow. Honor unlocks communion with God and each other as we give our first fruits.
I had never seen this before, but after today I will never forget it. Barns and vats, bread and wine, Passover and Pentecost, what an awesome God we serve. Www.apostolicresourcecenter.org
