Always Communicating

Language is the sound of communication and if you do not understand the language you can still enjoy the sound without knowing what is being said. Everything communicates. Trees clap their hands, birds sing their songs, dolphins speak and humanity has a variety of languages.

While out walking very early this morning, the sound of the birds singing was loud. No cars driving by, no people speaking, no speakers blaring, just the sound of birds singing. As I listened to them sing their songs, the Holy Spirit began to speak to me saying, “The birds don’t stop singing as the day goes on, you can’t hear them because of all the other noise that has arisen.”

I pondered these words for the rest of my walk. The songs of the birds are still being sung all day long, but we can’t hear them because of the hum of cars, the voices of people, and the sound of music coming out of speakers.

This means God is always speaking, but we can’t hear Him because of all the other sounds drowning out His voice. It reminded me of the story of Elijah in 1 Kings 19:11-12 “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”

Elijah knew God in the fire, he saw it come down on the altar in the showdown with the prophets of Baal. He knew God in the wind, for the whirlwind would take him up and away from Elisha. But it wasn’t the power elements in which God wanted him to hear His voice, but rather in the whisper.

God whispers a lot and if your ear is tuned to the whisper, you can hear it in the midst of other noise. Matthew 4:4 says, “Man does not live on bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” His voice is your sustenance, listen for the whisper, it carries great power and is singing underneath all the noise.
