A New Name

The need for something new comes out of the current whatever, being old or outdated. When our bodies get old, the Lord promises us a new body according to 1 Corinthians 15. When our car is old, we buy a new car. When our computer is outdated and can no longer be updated, we buy a new one. When a wineskin was old, they would create a new one. The old and outdated are two reasons we get something new.

When sin got old in our life, we cried out to Jesus and He gave us a new life. When we recognize something is old or outdated, we replace it with something new. We have the need for a new name, for our old name is old and outdated. Our name carries with it many memories and many mysteries. All believers became new when they got saved, but how many of us heard the new name we were given, so we could operate in the new identity we have been given and experience the new mysteries that come with that new name?

As I was reading Revelation 3 this morning, it says, “I will write on him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God, and My new name.” This is Jesus speaking to John in Revelation 3:12, I had never seen this before, but Jesus is given a new name with the coming of the new Jerusalem. Jesus is no longer the man hanging on a cross, He is the resurrected King and He is given a new name. As I read this, I sensed the presence of God in the room and I believe He wants to give us a new name. With the new name will come a new identity, a new mystery and a new joy. This new name does not carry with it all the old memories of your birth name. It is going to be new.

We all love getting a new car, a new house, a new job, but how many of us are asking the Lord to give us a new name? On my 25th anniversary of being a Christian, the Lord changed my name, He gave me a new name and I have lived from that name for 7 years now and my life has changed dramatically. A new name is what many of us need, more than a new car, a new vacation destination, or a new relationship, ask the Lord to give you a new name and watch how your life changes, for names are powerful.
