Theology Matters

We must stop creating theologies around what we are going through. Our current reality is not the place to declare a theology. He is the Ancient of Days! Our theology needs to match His reality not ours.

I was praying with Psalm 66 this morning when I penned the above words. He is so kind; generous; loving; faithful; strong; trustworthy; powerful; fun; just to name a few things. How can I create a theology about my circumstances when this is just some of who He is? Theology is the study of God not the study of my circumstances.

Psalm 66:12 says, “You made men ride over our heads; We went through fire and through water, Yet You brought us out into a place of abundance.” People have a tendency to want a theology that matches their reality, to validate what they are going through. When you are going through something it feels like it is never going to change, because you are going through it. The challenge is, leaders have created theologies out of things we go through so when an earthquake happens, a volcano erupts, a solar eclipse is seen, a recession goes into effect, or something else shakes, people decry Matthew 24, Jesus is coming, the rapture is near.

People reveal their theology, what they believe about God when something is shaking. When all is well we sing with a loud voice, God is good! But the news shares something bad and we declare, the end is near! My friends, God is not unstable, He is not shakable, He is not worried about our current reality and we are not to be either. Matthew 7 says, do not worry about what you will eat, drink, or wear, for God knows you need all these things. It is time to get a true theology of God, not our circumstances if we are going to stand in the shaking, for everything that can be shaken is going to shake, this we know, but we also know the kingdom of God is an unshakable kingdom, so there is nothing to fear.
